Battles occur at different parts of the story. Usually battles occur when a new area is discovered.
The battle system deviates from traditional turn-based RPG games of the genre. Battles occur using normal map and character movements, and are essentially puzzles to be solved using the provided resources at the start of the battle. The objective of each battle is to disable the Beard Police characters on the map, thus leading to a safe exit route and avoiding arrest and capture. Disabling the guards is done using the provided battle cards, causing them to fall asleep. All police guards have a visible field of view, and walking into this field causes detection and terminates the battle. The battle will then reset and restart from the beginning.
A battle ends when one of these conditions is met:
- All guards are successfully disabled (win)
- The objective point is reached (win)
- All battle cards are used, and no dropped cards are still available pick up on the map (lose)
- A guard detects the player (lose)
The battle cards are provided at the start of the battle and indicate actions (moves) to be taken to disable the guards and maneuver around the map. Disabling a guard may cause them to drop more cards, which are then added to the current set of cards to allow more moves.
